A new quarter in Dusseldorf

With the Grand Central – currently Dusseldorf‘s largest housing project – a lively, future-oriented area is being planned and developed at the site of the former postal distribution centre, close to the main railway station. The new neighbourhood between Erkrather Strasse, Moskauer Strasse and Bahntrasse thus complements the goals of the “Masterplan Areal Düsseldorfer Hauptbahnhof” to upgrade the entire area around the station and Konrad-Adenauer-Platz, while integrating itself into the concept and network of new mobility in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital.

      On the 40,000 m² gross property area of the Grand Central site, a mixed-use complex is being created on eleven building plots, including residential space, retail space, restaurants, a fitness centre, a day-care centre, a multi storey car park and a communal underground car park. Over 1,000 apartments for all ages and income levels will ensure diversity in the neighbourhood – including privately financed, publicly funded and low-rent units. At the Grand Central, urban and vibrant city lifestyles are combined with quiet seclusion and green oases of calm. On one hand, the project’s location in the middle of the city means Düsseldorf‘s highlights, like the Old Town and the “Kö”, are very close by. On the other hand, the new neighbourhood is designed to be completely carfree, and stationary traffic will not be permitted underground. Lots of green in the open public spaces will promote a better microclimate, despite the urbanity. Children will be able to play safely in the green courtyards, while pedestrians stroll in pocket parks and along the boulevards.
